{"id":9736,"date":"2018-03-07T12:02:14","date_gmt":"2018-03-07T10:02:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.webafrica.co.za\/blog\/?p=9736"},"modified":"2026-02-26T15:27:02","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T13:27:02","slug":"setting-up-your-devices-wifi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.webafrica.co.za\/blog\/uncategorized\/setting-up-your-devices-wifi\/","title":{"rendered":"Setting up your Device&#8217;s WiFi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This one goes out to all those born before 1950 who are struggling to connect to their WiFi (Okay, so I wrote it for my mom, but I think it&#8217;s worthy of a blog post).<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve got this great internet connection at home now, thanks to your Webafrica services, but despite all the rumours you&#8217;ve heard about saving on mobile data on your cell phone and browsing on your laptop in bed, you just can&#8217;t make it work if you&#8217;re not connected to the router (modem) via a LAN cable.<\/p>\n<p>You check your router. All the lights are shining brightly, but still, you can&#8217;t get online if you&#8217;re not plugged in with a physical cable.<\/p>\n<p>Chances are, it&#8217;s your device&#8217;s (phone, tablet, laptop or Smart TV) WiFi that&#8217;s <strong>not enabled.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re using an Android device (such as Samsung, Huawei, Lenovo, or anything that is not an Apple product) You will need to navigate to your <strong>WiFi settings<\/strong> and ensure that your <strong>WiFi is enabled<\/strong>. If you are connected to the LAN cable it will show a screen with a cord. If you are connected via WiFi it will show some version of the icon below:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9743\" src=\"https:\/\/www.webafrica.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/wifi-icon-4-500x305.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"487\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.webafrica.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/wifi-icon-4-500x305.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blog.webafrica.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/wifi-icon-4-400x244.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blog.webafrica.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/wifi-icon-4-60x37.jpg 60w, https:\/\/blog.webafrica.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/wifi-icon-4.jpg 526w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 487px) 100vw, 487px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once you have turned on your device&#8217;s WiFi receiver, you must make sure that you<strong> connect to the WiFi<\/strong> signal being emitted from your router.<\/p>\n<p>To do this you need to <strong>find your router&#8217;s signal<\/strong> on your device, select it, and <strong>enter your password<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This <strong>router name and password<\/strong> will be printed on a sticker under the router unless you have changed it.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t worry if you can see other router&#8217;s listed on your device. They probably belong to your neighbours.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can change your router name and password<\/strong> in the online Set-Up\u00a0wizard. To access the Wizard you need to type your\u00a0router&#8217;s address into the search bar on your browser (google). This will be a number that you will find on the insert in your router&#8217;s box.<\/p>\n<h3>Special WiFi Considerations<\/h3>\n<p><strong>FIBRE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you are close to the router (in the same room) select the 5G WiFi connection.<\/p>\n<p>If you are further away from the router (on the other\u00a0side of the house) select the regular WiFi connection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>LTE\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If your internet is slow, try moving your router to different areas in the house until you find the best spot to get signal from the tower.<\/p>\n<p>Remeber that things like thick walls, mirrors and radios will all have an impact on your signal strength.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ADSL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If your ADSL internet is slow it will often respond to this simple trick: Turn it off, wait 30 seconds, turn it back on again.
