If you don’t know already, we’re celebrating our 16th birthday this month (which coincidentally falls on the 16th of August). Instead of receiving presents this year, we’re giving them out! Each day for 16 days leading up to our birthday, we’re offering awesome prizes to lucky winners.
For the next three days we’re giving away iPod shuffles worth R599 each. We’ll pick the three lucky winners on Monday 5 August 2013 at 10am.
All you have to do to enter is answer this question in the comment space below:

Adel Groenewald
I was a die hard Linkin Park fan, partly because I liked that I was able to say all the rap parts as fast as they could, and partly because I’d recently cured myself of being a Westlife fan and they were a polar opposite to love songs and boy bands.
Ruan De Goede

Linkin Park : They opened my eyes – that there was more to music than a simple beat formulated to be commercially successful. They revolutionised the world of alternative rock with their unique style of electronic rock and industrial sound. Paired with emotive lyrics and awesome vocal talents, it’s not difficult to see why they remain popular and one of my favourite bands till today!
Sasha Ohlms

Jaco Hamilton-Attwell
IRON MAIDEN!
m/ UP THE IRONS! m/
My introduction to the beauty of metal was through Iron Maiden. Initially it was something different to listen to. No radio station would play such music and no-one in my family had ever heard of Iron Maiden (apart from what Rodney Seal spoke of in his “book”).
I was intrigued by the lyrics. Songs of sadness, love, being different, being scared, all in one album! And, of course, Eddie! Fear of the Dark was my introduction. I soon ended up with more Iron Maiden tapes! Powerslave and 7th Son of the 7th Son being my favourites.
Many a teenage-angsty-angry-sorry-for-myself night was spent with Bruce Dickinson in the background of melancholy poetry and woeful thoughts! [It is funny to think on those times now!]
My collection and variety has grown, but nearly 20 years later, Maiden is still a proud part of my life!
JeremyWilkinson

Deep Purple – Smoke on the Water. Irritated my ‘rents.Who doesnt like it? Why not? Made one nerdish 16 year old feel like a (heavy?) rock rebel. It could have been Uriah Heep – July Morning … but Smoke on the water won.

When I was 16 in 1960 “bands” as such were not so plentiful due to rock stars like Elvis Presley and “Its now or never” would be a track from that time that would also sum up my chances of winning in this competition! Nowadays, it would have to be Journey.

My appreciation for The Beatles slowly evolved. When I was a youngster I liked them because they were so “radical” and played “rock and roll”. Of course, Paul to me was “dreamy” and maybe that was the true start of the fascination. I think at a young age I was more of a Paul fan, and over time, music beacame a very important part of my life. As I grew on in years I started paying more attention to their personalities and became intrigued with John. After the Beatles split I continued to follow their separate paths at least with re: to John and Paul. I still purchased the Wings releases and Lennon’s solo stuff. But it wasn’t until after their break-up and as I got older that I realized their significance and the defining role the Beatles had in music history. I would say I have become more of a Beatles fan in this past decade than I was when they were together. I can’t beleive I overlooked Harrison’s contributions back then either. “All Things Must Pass” has got to be one of my top 10 albums. As I have matured, so have my tastes. Still loving the Beatles but with much more appreciation!

Depeche Mode. They had a great sound to them, it sounded great even on my old double tape deck which wasn’t high quality or anything. So many years later I still listen to their music and remember the evenings sitting with my old orange sponge style headphones on with the volume up high.
JeremyWilkinson

Journey – timeless music!
Bernice Harman
Depeche Mode was all the rage when I was 16. Ultimate song was STRANGELOVE, and my other favourites PERSONAL JESUS & JUST CAN’T GET ENOUGH. It united us as the teens of the 1990’s. It was practically a cult sensation! The love still lingers and we reminisce when we hear a track, bringing back memories of the fabulous, fun nights we had in the clubs in Cape Town. We wrote DEPECHE MODE on our schoolbags..the lyrics were present everywhere..
Mark Landers
Metallica,
The riffs and drumming along with Kirk Hammett’s solos were the best in my mind.
I had all their CDs and a file with all cut outs of them,aw well as t-shirts and DVDs and tons of posters, the were simply kick as. in my mind.
Zakeera Parker
This takes me back to my teenybopper days!!! And boy, those were the days! While the likes of almost EVERY band like Hanson, Backstreet Boys, Savage Garden, Matchbox Twenty, Dave Matthews Band, Daft Punk, Texas, No Doubt, Boys II men, Nsync, The Cardigans and hell even Aqua and the Spicegirls had me voting “kiff” the all time classic for my sweet 16th year had to be Chumbawamba with their hit Tubthumping! It was just the kickass band with the kickass track for a kickass year!!!!

Hi,
I discovered Nirvana and Def Leppard when I was 16, and they still on my music playlists π My guy friends didn’t like Def Leppard much, but the words really appealed to all the girls when they did listen to it, and once they figured that out, everyone was pounding it out of their Hifi’s, radios, car’s, disk-mans and walk-mans! (No iPods back in the day)
Your Google Plus link to your competition doesn’t work: https://plus.google.com/+webafrica, therefore those of us that don’t have Facebook or Twitter cannot fully participate!!!
