Win a Wii mini console

We’re almost finished our Sweet 16 Giveaway (read more about it here), where we’ve been handing out awesome prizes to lucky winners each day since the beginning of August. Friday the 16th is our birthday, so we’ve only got two prizes to go before our main prize of a Macbook Air.

Today’s prize is for the gamers! We’re giving away a Wii Mini Console worth R1477. We’ll pick the winner at 10am on Thursday 15 August.

To enter, all you have to do is answer this question in the comments below:

My favorite game when i was 16 would probably be Counter Strike. Had a friend with a bunch of computers hooked up to a network and we used to run around and blow each other up. Too much fun, actually downloaded the original one the other day.

My favourite game was Grand Theft Auto Vice City. As a teenager, with school and family stress, this was the perfect opportunity for me to blow off some steam, and do all kinds of crazy things that I’d never do in real life, like drive on pavements, take part in rampages, headshots, extreme stunts etc. It was the perfect game because it combines fighting, shooting, socialising, racing, running businesses, being an ambulance drive, and even selling ice-cream in an old ice-cream van. If you have not played this game, you have not lived.

Was probably StarQuake was a game on my old ZX Spectrum. Thankfully I had a disk drive so loaded quicker vs the 5-10min+ wait other people had. Was a platform/levels game that was super addictive. Recently played it on an emulator which was great fun. To think what they did with 48kb RAM (and was even less after the video RAM was taken off) and he quality games that came out.

Resident Evil 1. The title that started one of the most epic, addictive, thrilling and cerebrally captivating game franchises of all time. The grand daddy of all survival horror games! It had an amazing scare factor and many elements that had not been seen in games before it and has been hard to equal or surpass in all titles since it’s release. You’re not a gamer if you haven’t experienced RE1. Yes RE1 is more than a game, it’s an experience!

My memory is fuzzy going that far back but I swear I remember skipping ropes, hula hoops were a big craze and I was always in competition against my brothers with yoyo tricks. Of course there were the Beatles and Rolling Stones and the “twist” was big at that stage! And snakes and ladders, ludo and snap! Oh the games we played!

Ah 2007, this was a great year for me. I was 16, had just built up my very first gaming PC with the hard earned cash I had saved up for, which felt like ages, and was ready to take on the world of gaming – this time for real. I remember finding a copy of Game Maker on some pc magazine’s cover disk. I, having no programming knowledge to speak of at the time, decided to make a game. I didn’t have access to the Internet at the time so all I had was the manual for reference and my mind for ideas. Swirling around the proverbial enigma that were my game ideas, I came up with something. It was a top down adventure where the player would control a little gnome called Roger, a one-life defender of a mythical land who had to fight off treasure hoarding bears, who were presumably evil. I called the game “Evil Bear Takeover”. I remember at a LAN party, after a good weekend of no sleep, showing my friends this creation of mine. It was either the sleep depravity or the fact that the bears would randomly spawn in each room (even on the player sometimes) that made my game a hit amongst them. It may not have been the best game or having most flashy graphics, or logical plot for that matter, but it was my game. And this moment lead to something great.

As we stayed on a hill, we would all get together and roll our bikes down the hill and see who’s would go the furtherest without crashing. Then the bonus would be who’s folks would take the longest to find out your bike was trashed. Was really hilarious at the time!……lol

Even today, we still dont own a game console as we were 5 girls in the house and our dad just didnt think it a “girl” thing to buy this, so we were left to go to arcades. I was 16 in the mid eighties – Standard 8 (Grade 10). We
were still struggling to deal with a lot of issues in the country and often it
lead to unrest and it was unsafe to go to school for days at a time. Arcade
games cost 20c and this is where I headed; the café down the road was a haven
and provided me with Donkey Kong, Popeye, Golden Axe and of course, Double
Dragon! Man, I elbowed my way through many, many enemies including bosses 😉

Of course I owned a handheld Nintendo Game&Watch and
Fire Attack was my favourite. Boy those black and gray LCD graphics ate up
hours of my time after school! Alas, I think a bully stole mine eventually.

A mate owned a ZX Spectrum and RoboCop was a firm favourite
(oooh, I can still hear the Midi theme reverberating around my head – ta ta ta
    ta ta taa).

I think the Pentium processor was still a way off haha.

…but I think the most popular console was the cartridge game console which
promised one MILLION in 1 games – oh boy, I don’t believe it ever delivered on
    that promise!

    Game of choice – CONTRA!

Wow I am having such a blast reliving those memories that I am actually
    experiencing goose-bumps here.

And if you had told me then that 20 years hence a person
could control a game without even a remote never mind without wires in your own
home I would have laughed in your face – that’s Star Trek territory man! Guess
    we are living it now…

    Great give-away Web Africa 🙂

Another favourite was Crime Wave by Access in 1990. ” Determined to save the girl, LUKE first checks his Crime Computer”… This blew my 16 year old mind. Nothing was this violent at the time!

Best game when i was 16 was definitely Grid! Bought the original when it came out as an early birthday present to myself and a few months ago added Grid 2 to my collection! What an epic way to spend your 16th and 21st birthdays!

I think these questions are really designed to show ones age! 😛 Nevertheless 1994… That was still the era when FPSes were in its infancy with Castle Wolfenstein. The games that ruled back then were the adventure games from Sierra and LucasArts and your side scroll platformers. On the top of my gaming list back then was

    Kings Quest 5,
    Monkey Island,
    Wing Commander,
    Gabriel Knight,
    Prince of Persia (the original),
UGH! (phenomenaly addictive game that was just 160k… yes kilobytes),
    Juju (arcade game),
    Flashback.

The one game however, which I played then and many times since and will play again is GODS. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gods_%28video_game%29). For me one of the best puzzle platformers at the time. Finishing the game on one play-through was a huge achievement!
