Improved Search Engine Results – SEO advice

image_previewThis is the first of many educational blog posts that we will be doing aimed at the IT sector. This blog in particular is intended to help those of you who don’t know what Search Engine Optimization is or how it can help you.

So what is Search Engine Optimization? (SEO)
SEO is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to your website from search engines such as Google and Bing through natural/un-paid search results.
There are multiple ways of driving traffic to your website without having to burn a hole in your wallet.[...]

A few examples include:

Keywords
Find out which words and phrases are the most important to your industry are getting the most attention from searchers. Think like a searcher and make sure your website contains all the keywords you would be looking for.

Content
“Content is king” is a common phrase used among SEO specialists. Make sure that the content on your website is user and search engine friendly. Professionally written content is also very important to ensure that users promote your company and want to keep reading what you are offering.

image_previewMeta Tag Development
Developing your meta tags is very important and has an effect on both the SEO and click through rate. Rename pages to be relevant to searches.

Link Building
The concept behind link building is to get outside links to your websites from other sites in relevant industries. This builds your website’s authority in the eyes of the search engines and helps increase traffic to your site.
Say you run a gaming website, make sure you have external links from major gaming forums like Ps3 and Xbox360 pointing to your website. Local is always better, so if you’re targeting a local market, you want to get links from other local websites to promote your services/products. Think of links as “votes” for your site.

A/B Testing
There can often be arguments within a company as to the best design/layout to go with when trying to decide between 2 equally good ideas, with no one really knowing the best solution. A great way to resolve this is to test both solutions in a live environment. Whichever performs the best is clearly the superior solution. This is known as A/B testing.

The way this is done is by configuring your website home page (for example) to randomly load 2 different landing pages at random and track the habits of the users from that point onwards. After you have gathered enough data you will be able to determine which home page guided your users through to your checkout the most successfully.

These 5 ways are just a few ways of improving traffic to your site. For the best results it is suggested that you hire a professional SEO company to manage your website. Google AdWords is also a key driver of traffic but requires a budget. We are offering some free vouchers for those of you who would like to try them out and see how they can help your business.

I hope that you have found this blog helpful and that perhaps you gained a few bits of information that will help you ensure a better ranking for your site and an improvements in stats.

Often we forget the little guy, the SMB, in our discussions of the comings and goings of the Internet marketing industry. Sure there are times like this when a report surfaces talking about their issues and concerns but, for the most part, we like to talk about big brands and how they do the Internet marketing thing well or not so well.

Oops...forgot to say great post! Looking forward to your next one.
  • Thanks Your information....
  • Nice post. Very simple and informative.

Really in it's most simplest form, SEO is just common sense. Write for your target audience, humans and not Search Engines. Make use of the common tips, as per your post.
You will have achieved a lot just by obeying those simple rules.
  • Interesting to see the interest locally in the SEO industry grow (especially after the UK report with the online ad spend increasing, overtaking TV).

Many people believe that it requires an astronaut degree or large sums of cash to optimise their site, however it is in most cases small changes that can make the world of difference as you mentioned, a change in meta data can result in a complete change in the traffic to the site from organic traffic.

Just another point to add to your post, always make sure you have some form of web analytics for a site, if anyone is not monitoring what works and what doesn't, any changes are going to be guess work to say the least :)
